The notion of money trees, or Pachira aquatica, as symbols of luck and prosperity is relatively recent, tracing back to the 1980s rather than ancient times. Interestingly, the braided money tree, now synonymous with luck, was initially grown by a Taiwanese truck driver and gained popularity in Asia, particularly among feng shui practitioners.
Light:
Money trees thrive in bright, indirect light, although they can adapt to lower light conditions. Shield them from direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorching, and place them away from drafty windows and heating vents to avoid dehydration. If adequate natural light isn't available, consider supplementing with a grow light. Rotate the plant monthly for uniform growth.
Water:
When the top 2–4 inches of soil are dry (typically once a week), it's time to water your money tree. Adjust watering frequency according to the seasons, watering more often during spring and summer, and less in fall and winter. Ensure thorough watering until water drains from the pot's bottom, and remove any excess water from the saucer. Adequate drainage in the pot and soil is crucial to prevent overwatering.
Humidity:
Maintain moderate to high humidity levels for optimal growth of your money tree. Low humidity may lead to crispy brown edges on leaves, eventually causing them to wilt and drop off.
Other:
Money trees are resilient and require minimal pruning, often lasting for years. They are also safe for pets.
