String of Dolphins

6 inch Hanging Basket

Scientifically known as Senecio peregrinus, String of Dolphins is a charming succulent prized for its unique foliage that resembles leaping dolphins. Native to South Africa, this trailing succulent belongs to the Asteraceae family and is a hybrid of Senecio rowleyanus (String of Pearls) and Senecio articulatus (Hot Dog Cactus).

The plant features long, trailing stems that can reach lengths of several feet, making it an ideal candidate for hanging baskets or containers. Along these stems grow clusters of small, succulent leaves that resemble miniature dolphins, complete with "fins" and "tails." Each leaf is typically green with distinct markings and variegation, adding visual interest to the plant.

String of Dolphins is a relatively low-maintenance plant, making it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners. With its whimsical foliage and easy-care nature, String of Dolphins is a delightful addition to any succulent collection or indoor garden, bringing a touch of charm and personality to any space.

Share:
  1. Light: Provide String of Dolphins with bright, indirect sunlight. It can tolerate some direct morning or late afternoon sun but avoid intense sunlight, which can cause leaf burn. Rotate the plant occasionally to ensure even growth.
  2. Water: Allow the soil to dry out partially between waterings, then water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom of the pot. Water less frequently during the winter months when growth slows. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
  3. Soil: Plant String of Dolphins in well-draining soil formulated for succulents and cacti. A commercial cactus mix or a blend of potting soil, perlite, and coarse sand works well. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
  4. Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C) during the growing season. String of Dolphins can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures in winter but should be protected from frost.
  5. Humidity: String of Dolphins prefers average indoor humidity levels. If humidity is low, especially during winter, place a tray of water or use a humidifier to increase moisture around the plant.
  6. Fertilization: Feed String of Dolphins sparingly during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Apply the fertilizer every 4-6 weeks to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Avoid overfertilizing, as it can lead to salt buildup and damage the roots.
  7. Pruning: Prune String of Dolphins as needed to control its size and shape. Remove any dead, damaged, or leggy stems or leaves using clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears. Pruning also helps promote bushier growth.
  8. Propagation: String of Dolphins can be propagated easily from stem cuttings. Simply snip off a healthy stem with at least one node, allow it to callus for a few days, then plant it in well-draining soil. Keep the soil lightly moist until roots develop.
  9. Pests and Diseases: Inspect String of Dolphins regularly for pests such as mealybugs, spider mites, or aphids. Treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot and fungal diseases.
