The Gardenia is a subtropical evergreen shrub with dark green leaves and beautiful creamy white flowers with a strong scent. If the flowers are pollinated, orange fruits with an interesting shape can develop.
Light:
Gardenia bonsai trees thrive in bright, indirect light. They do well in locations that receive plenty of light but are protected from the harshest midday sun. Insufficient light can lead to poor flowering and leggy growth.
Watering:
Water regularly, but don't overwater, as this can cause root rot. The soil should be moist but not soggy, and you can apply mulch to help retain moisture. Gardenias prefer acidic, well-draining soil and can benefit from rainwater. If kept indoors, you can also spray the plant with lime-free water to increase humidity.
Temperature:
If kept indoors, keep your gardenia in a location with temperatures between 60–75°F (15–24°C) and avoid placing it near drafts or heat sources.
Pruning:
Prune your gardenia regularly to maintain its shape and balance the canopy and root systems. In particular, you can remove dead or diseased branches, branches that cross the trunk, and heavy upward growth. You can also prune the roots every spring to balance out any trimming you've done to the foliage.
Fertilizing:
During the growing season, which is usually early spring to fall, you can fertilize your gardenia every 2–4 weeks with a balanced or acid-forming fertilizer diluted to half strength. You can reduce feeding in the winter and fall.
Pests:
Gardenia bonsai are susceptible to pests like aphids and spider mites.
