Dragon Bones

6 inch pot

Euphorbia lactea, commonly known as "Dragon Bones," is a striking succulent characterized by its thick, green stems with prominent ribs. The stems resemble a dragon's tail, hence the name. Along the edges of the stems, there are small, sharp thorn-like projections. These succulents can grow up to several feet tall and form a branching, tree-like structure over time. In favorable conditions, they may produce small clusters of greenish-yellow flowers at the stem tips.

Despite their cactus-like appearance, Euphorbia lactea is not a true cactus but belongs to the Euphorbia genus, known for its diverse range of shapes and forms. These plants are native to Madagascar and are well-suited to arid climates, making them excellent choices for drought-tolerant landscapes or indoor cultivation in bright, sunny locations. Proper care includes providing well-draining soil, ample sunlight, and minimal watering to prevent root rot.

CAUTION: Use gloves when handling Euphorbia lactea, as the milky sap it produces can be irritating to the skin and toxic if ingested. Keep away from children and pets.

Share:
  1. Light:
  2. Place in a location with bright, indirect sunlight. Euphorbia lactea thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
  3. Watering:
  4. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly, especially during the winter months when the plant is dormant. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
  5. Soil:
  6. Plant in well-draining soil mix, such as cactus or succulent potting mix. A mix of sand, perlite, and potting soil works well.
  7. Temperature:
  8. Keep the plant in temperatures above 50°F (10°C). It can tolerate warmer temperatures but may suffer damage if exposed to frost.
  9. Humidity:
  10. Euphorbia lactea prefers low to moderate humidity levels. Avoid overly humid conditions, as they can promote fungal growth.
  11. Fertilization:
  12. Feed with a balanced, diluted fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) to promote healthy growth. Avoid fertilizing during the dormant winter months.
  13. Pruning:
  14. Trim back any dead or damaged stems as needed. Use caution when handling, as the milky sap can irritate the skin.
  15. Pests and Diseases:
  16. Keep an eye out for pests like mealybugs and scale insects. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent fungal diseases.
  17. Repotting:
  18. Repot every 2-3 years in spring if the plant has outgrown its container. Use a slightly larger pot with fresh soil.
  1.  CAUTION: Use gloves when handling Euphorbia lactea, as the milky sap it produces can be irritating to the skin and toxic if ingested. Keep away from children and pets.
