Peanut Cactus

6 inch Hanging Basket

Scientifically known as Echinopsis chamaecereus, the Peanut Cacuts is a charming succulent native to Argentina. It features cylindrical stems that resemble peanuts, hence its name. These trailing stems can grow up to 12 inches long and produce small, vermilon-red flowers in the spring and summer. The plant is adorned with dense clusters of tiny spines along the stems, giving it a unique texture. It is a low-maintenance plant, ideal for beginners, and thrives in well-draining soil with plenty of sunlight.

Share:
  1. Light: Place the cactus in a location where it can receive plenty of bright sunlight. This plant can handle full sun or partial shade. A south-facing window is ideal.
  2. Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly, especially during the winter months when the plant is dormant.
  3. Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
  4. Temperature: Keep the cactus in a warm environment, ideally between 65°F to 85°F (18°C to 29°C). Protect it from cold drafts or extreme temperature fluctuations.
  5. Humidity: Peanut Cacti are adapted to arid conditions and do not require high humidity levels. Average indoor humidity is sufficient.
  6. Fertilization: Feed the cactus with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing during the dormant period.
  7. Pruning: Remove any dead or damaged stems as needed using sterilized pruning shears. This will promote healthy growth and maintain the plant's appearance.
  8. Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for common succulent pests like mealybugs or scale insects. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  9. Potting: Repot the cactus every 2-3 years or when it outgrows its current container. Choose a slightly larger pot with adequate drainage holes.
  10. Propagation: Peanut Cacti can be propagated easily from stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to callous for a few days before planting them in a well-draining soil mix. Keep the soil lightly moist until new roots develop.
